Built on trust and alignment: Fábio Aguiar on the values behind Tug Network Team

Tug Network Team met with Fábio Aguiar, Commercial Director from Sulnorte, to discuss why the alliance made sense from the start and what it stands for in the market today. While earlier interviews explored the birth of the idea, the next phase and the customer value of the alliance, this conversation focused on something equally important: the principles behind it.

For Fábio, Tug Network Team is not just about reach or scale. It is about building a structured global collaboration between independent towage operators that share the right values, the right mindset and the right long-term view of the market.

From Sulnorte’s perspective, why did the idea of Tug Network Team make sense from the start?

TNT was created to be a new alternative in the towing market. From Sulnorte’s perspective, the concept made immediate sense because it addressed a clear gap in the market: the need for a structured, global collaboration among independent towage operators.

This partnership allows companies like ours to extend reach and capabilities without compromising autonomy. It creates a platform for sharing best practices and commercial opportunities while preserving local expertise. In the end, it strengthens competitiveness in an increasingly globalized maritime environment.

Why does an alliance like TNT matter for independent towage operators today?

Today’s maritime industry is driven by scale, consistency and global coverage. Those are areas where independent operators can face limitations if they act alone. A partnership like TNT enables members to collectively offer a broader and more reliable service footprint.

It also increases visibility with international customers who are looking for standardized quality across regions. At the same time, it allows independent operators to remain agile and locally focused, which is often a key differentiator compared with larger consolidated players. If I had to summarize it in one word, I would say empowerment.

Why are neutrality and independence such important principles within Tug Network Team?

Neutrality and independence are foundational to TNT because they create trust among members and credibility with customers. Each company remains fully autonomous, with no conflicts of interest or competitive overlap imposed by the partnership. That creates room for genuine collaboration instead of internal competition. It also means decisions are made in the best interest of service quality and long-term relationships, not driven by centralized control.

What kind of confidence does that give to customers?

For customers, this model creates confidence in both consistency and integrity. They know they are dealing with reputable and well-established local operators who work according to shared standards. At the same time, they benefit from the coordination and global perspective of the network. That combination helps reduce operational risk and improves service reliability, especially for customers operating across multiple regions.

What makes a company the right fit for Tug Network Team?

The right fit goes beyond operational capability. It is fundamentally about alignment in values. Members need to demonstrate strong safety standards, a proven track record and financial solidity. Just as important is a real commitment to collaboration, transparency and long-term thinking. TNT is built on trust, so cultural fit and reputation are just as critical as fleet size or market presence.

Why is reputation so important in an alliance like this?

Reputation is one of the core assets within TNT because each member reflects on the entire network. A company needs a reliable market history to provide confidence in the security of its business. Customers often rely on the collective credibility of the partnership when selecting operators in different regions. A strong reputation supports consistency in service delivery and reinforces trust across the network. The opposite is also true. Any weakness can affect all members, which is why maintaining high standards is non-negotiable.

TNT wants to grow, but not at any cost. How do you balance expansion with selectivity?

That requires a disciplined and strategic approach. TNT prioritizes quality over quantity, making sure that any new member strengthens the network rather than diluting it. Expansion should be guided by clear criteria, including market relevance, operational excellence and cultural alignment.

The current members already have key frameworks in place, such as codes of ethics, ESG policies, environmental care and health and safety programmes. That measured approach helps ensure the partnership remains cohesive, reliable and valuable to both members and customers.

What does Sulnorte hope TNT will stand for in the market over time?

Sulnorte hopes TNT will be recognized as a benchmark for collaboration among independent towage operators. Over time, the partnership should stand for reliability, trust and consistent service quality across global markets. We also see TNT as a platform for innovation and knowledge sharing within the industry.

Ultimately, it should reinforce the value of independence while also delivering the scale and coordination that customers increasingly demand. Towing is a business of opportunity, vision and courage. The winners are the ones who interpret people, whether customers or competitors, correctly and quickly.

Fabio Aguiar’s perspective adds another important layer to the Tug Network Team story. In his view, the strength of the alliance does not only lie in broader reach or commercial opportunity. It lies in the trust, discipline and alignment that make long-term cooperation possible.
